Blue circular economy and innovation in the Med fisheries and aquaculture sectors - BLUEfasma project

BLUEfasma integrates and implements circular economy (CE) principles in the key blue growth

sector of fishing and aquaculture to benefit Mediterranean insular and coastal areas in an innovative way. The final goal is to have more sustainable fishing and aquaculture sectors. Some of the project recommendations have been shared, among others:

- In the case of the Mediterranean fisheries and aquaculture sector, the majority of production is in the hands of small businesses and fishing cooperatives (small groups of fishermen). In most of the cases, have a limited turnover, are severely affected by climate change, and are currently facing the consequences of the pandemic, as well as rising prices of fuels.

- The promotion and support of coordinated collaborations between producers, as well as the facilitation of administrative and fiscal of its implantation, are fundamental for the development of the Circular Economy in the sector.

- The transfer of technology to gain energy efficiency is especially necessary for replacing the current engines of the fishing fleets and reaching 0 CO2 emissions, always ensuring the safety of navigation by reducing harmful emissions.

- It is necessary to promote and encourage research in the same way as for land transport and, in part, for the nautical sector and mercantile.

- And it is necessary to incorporate into the sector the use of non-polluting natural energies, which can be reduced considerably to lower production costs and free up investment capacity to implement improvements in the circular economy.
